Unorthodox Studios is a private studio run by Chalice Bartsch-Bailley. This small collective located on the outskirts in NoDa of Charlotte. We provide a range of workshops and art sessions for artist to fine tune their work, or for beginners having a safe place to start.
- Figure drawing on Thursdays nights from 7 to 10 pm.
- Etching press and workspace rental hourly for $20 p/h
- Group Critiques every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month
Our figure sessions last 180 min. The routine is Ten 30 sec warm ups, followed by Ten 1 min warm ups. For the rest of the evening we settle into Two long poses. The first pose is for Two 20 min sessions, the second pose is for Three 20 min sessions. There are 10 min breaks after every session for the model to stretch, artists to refill their beverage, and to take out the studio dog. If the model comes late, then the clock starts late. We pay our life models $20 an hour because we only charge $10 per artist.
For the models- there is a selection of chairs, a private stage, some fun props (including swords), clean sheets, and a rang of pillows.
For the artists- we offer a variety of easels, papers (for an additional cost or the next beer run), drawing boards, pencils, electric pencil sharpener, and erasers.
New to this life? Come anyways. We welcome the whole spectrum of creatives. Depending on your comfort level of suggestions or guided instruction during or before the drawing session, we are more than happy to lend helping hands. Please DM Chalice for more details.
Some artists just want to draw, drink, smoke, and chat. If that is what you are looking for on a weekly basis, then you found the right place. This is not a place that gives unsolicited instructions or advice. Questions of any nature at any time are welcomed with open arms, especially if it involves the music choice, model poses, or cocktail of the evening. When we set a time for a break, but someone wants to grab a drink or finish their smoke - we vote as a group adding a min to the break and/or the pose. This is a place where whom ever has the ‘worst’ drawing of the night, will get a pat on the back and free beer for doing their best. Professionalism is welcomed, creativity and silliness is required.
